During the first six months of 2026, commercial banks, including Fibank, will exchange banknotes and coins from BGN to EUR free of charge, at the official exchange rate. For amounts exceeding BGN 30,000 per transaction, banknotes and coins will be exchanged from BGN to EUR free of charge subject to a 3-business day advance request. Depositing of BGN banknotes and coins into customers' euro accounts with the Bank, and the related exchange, will also be free of charge.
Apart from commercial banks, the Bulgarian National Bank will also exchange banknotes and coins from BGN into EUR at the official exchange rate, free of charge, in unlimited quantities and without time limit.
For the benefit of its customers, even before the date of introduction of the euro, Fibank exempts from fees depositing of BGN in cash by individuals into their deposit or savings accounts, opened in BGN or EUR with the Bank. In addition, where applicable, the official exchange rate will be applied instead of the announced “sell” rate of the Bank.
Please be reminded that, on the day of the introduction of the euro, all funds in BGN-denominated accounts will be converted in EUR at the official exchange rate (BGN 1.95583 to EUR 1) automatically and free of charge.
From July 1, 2026, banks will no longer be obliged to provide the following services free of charge: cash exchange of banknotes and coins from BGN into EUR, as well as depositing of BGN in cash and the related exchange.
From January 1, 2027, banks will no longer be obliged to provide the service of cash exchange of banknotes and coins from BGN into EUR.
The requirements of the Anti-Money Laundering Measures Act and the Anti-Terrorism Financing and Distribution of Weapons of Mass Destruction Act shall apply to cash exchange services.
